Lateral Canthotomy
Date/Time: []
Indication: Retrobulbar hematoma/hemorrhage with elevated IOP
Provider: Self
Emergent consent obtained. The the skin over the lateral canthus of the affected eye was numbed with approximately 2 cc of 1% lidocaine with epinephrine. Using hemostats, the skin of the lateral canthus was crushed and squeezed for approximately 1 to 2 minutes. After removing hemostat, forceps were used to elevate the skin of the lateral canthus and scissors were carefully directed and used to cut the superior skin lateral to the eye. The inferior crus was identified and cut. It was immediately apparent that the lower eyelid was more mobile. At this point, the the patient was directed towards the superior crus which was also cut. The eyelids were completely mobile at this time. Repeat pressures were taken and confirmed the pressure had decreased. There were no apparent complications.
